According to the Bellingrath Gardens and Home website, Mr. Walter Duncan Bellingrath and his wife, Bessie Mae Morse, purchased the land that is currently part of the estate in 1917. The land was only 25 acres then and was a former fishing club known as Belle Camp.

10 years later, the Bellingrath’s hired architect George B. Rogers to transfer Belle Camp into a garden estate. After several years of construction, the permanent home for the Bellingrath’s was finally completed. It later opened to the public in 1934. Admission was only $1.

After his wife’s death in 1943, Mr. Bellingrath created the Belligrath-Morse Foundation to continue to upkeep the gardens as a memorial to his wife. The Foundation benefits Rhodes College in Memphis, Tennessee, Stillman College in Tuscaloosa, Alabama and Huntingdon College in Montgomery, Alabama. According to their website, the Belligrath-Morse Foundation contributes 80% of its distributions to these colleges. Until his death in 1955, Mr. Bellingrath worked to expand the gardens with roses, a guest house, a conservatory and much more.
