Fred D. Gray Avenue will soon be an official street in Montgomery. The dedication ceremony on Tuesday, October 26 is in honor of the decorated civil rights attorney and Montgomery native, who worked with prominent folks like Martin Luther King Jr. and Rosa Parks. Who is Fred D. Gray?

Allow me to offer a brief history refresher. A Montgomery native, Fred D. Gray is a celebrated civil rights attorney and champion for desegregation across Alabama and beyond.

He has an incredibly impressive tenure, from working with notable clients like Martin Luther King Jr. and Rosa Parks to becoming the first African American president of the Alabama State Bar Association in 2002.

The renaming process

According to The City of Montgomery, the journey to Fred D. Gray Avenue has been a lengthy one, officially beginning way back in December 2020. Specifically, an outdated process for renaming local streets caused major slow-downs.

But, on October 5, 2021, the Montgomery city council unanimously approved Mayor Reed’s resolution to rename the street. Then, it was time to begin planning the dedication ceremony.

Where is Fred D. Gray Avenue located?

Today’s ceremony will take place at cross-section of West Jefferson Davis Avenue and Oak Street.

Soon, West Jefferson Davis Avenue will have a new name—”Fred D. Gray Avenue.”
