Alabama artists seeking a big break have a huge opportunity this year to get their art noticed.

The Gibbes Museum of Art is now accepting submissions for the 1858 Prize for Contemporary Southern Art, awarding $10,000 to one standout artist.

The award not only comes with a cash prize, but also a year-long feature of the winning artwork in the Charleston-based museum. The winner will be celebrated in a three-day event in February 2026, including an unveiling of their artwork, a winter gala, and a speaking engagement.

The deadline to apply has been extended to Sep. 7, and all Alabama artists are encouraged to apply.

How to enter

The competition is open to artists who were raised in, born in, or currently live in Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia and West Virginia.

Submission requirements include:

  • Completed registration form
  • Artist statement (150 words or less)
  • Resume or CV
  • Up to 10 portfolio images or video
  • $35 non-refundable entry fee
  • Application | Website

The 1858 prize is presented by Society 1858. The prize recognizes artists whose work contributes to a deeper understanding of what it means to be from the South. Previously, winners have gone on to national acclaim, receiving fellowships and awards from many notable organizations.

The winner will be announced in October, following a jury selection process that consists of art professionals, a representative from Society 1858, and the winner from last year.

Whether you’re an established artist or an emerging voice in the South, this is a great opportunity to be recognized and to share your work on a national level.
