Observed nationwide each February, Black History Month is a time to recognize and honor the history, culture and lasting contributions of African Americans. What began as a weeklong observance has grown into a month dedicated to reflection, learning and celebration.

In Alabama, that history feels especially close to home. From pivotal moments in the Civil Rights Movement to the communities and leaders shaping the present, the state offers many ways to engage with Black history in meaningful ways.

Here are 13 events happening across Alabama this February that invite you to learn, connect + celebrate.

Isabel Anderson Comer Museum and Arts Center | Sylacauga

The Isabel Anderson Comer Museum and Arts Center is hosting a month-long exhibition highlighting the work and legacy of Black artists from across Alabama, with a special reception planned later in the month.

Selma film screening | Huntsville

This special screening of Selma revisits the historic 1965 voting rights marches from Selma to Montgomery, highlighting the courage and sacrifice behind one of the most significant moments in American history. The screening is followed by space for reflection and discussion.

Mayoral Black History Month luncheon | Dothan

This annual luncheon brings the community together to honor and reflect on the invaluable contributions of African Americans to society. The 2026 keynote address will be delivered by Randall Woodfin, Mayor of Birmingham, Alabama.

Breaking Barriers III: Foundation for Success | Pell City

Opening during Black History Month, this new exhibit honors the legacy of Black educators who shaped generations of students in Pell City. The third installment in the Museum of Pell City’s Breaking Barriers series highlights stories of perseverance, leadership and community impact through archival materials, oral histories and an original short film.

Rosa Parks birthday celebration | Montgomery

Celebrate the legacy of Rosa Parks with a family-friendly birthday celebration honoring her life and impact. The day includes free museum admission, children’s story time, a restored 1950s bus experience, birthday treats and a special program reflecting on her role in shaping the Civil Rights Movement.

Black Heritage Fair | Birmingham

Hosted by the Birmingham African American Genealogy Group, this annual Black Heritage Fair centers on preserving family history, community memory, and cultural legacy. The event includes a book sale and opportunities to explore genealogy resources connected to African American history in Alabama.

Voices in Black History showcase | Montgomery

Hosted by the Montgomery City-County Public Library, this performance showcase and art exhibition invites artists, dancers, musicians and speakers to share work inspired by African American history, culture and legacy. Selected artwork will be displayed throughout February, with live performances featured during the showcase.

Black History Month celebration | Foley

Foley Public Library is hosting a daylong Black History Month celebration centered on storytelling, lived experience and community history. The event features children’s story time, personal reflections from a local journalist, Africatown history and a powerful firsthand account reflecting on the day Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated.

Books on the Ground | Birmingham

Hosted by the Birmingham Public Library System, this community-centered celebration brings together local authors, artists and organizers for a day focused on storytelling, literacy and shared history. The event includes book giveaways, live programming and opportunities to connect through culture and conversation.

Rooted in Greatness community celebration | Decatur

Decatur Youth Services will host a Black History Month celebration honoring local leaders and community impact through music, performances and shared storytelling. The event centers on recognizing the people who help shape and strengthen the community.

Voices of Hope and Power choral concert | Huntsville

The Huntsville Music Office and Parks & Recreation invite the community to a free choral concert celebrating Black History Month with music and community voices.

Black History Month community celebration | Mobile

Celebrate Black History Month with a free, family-friendly community day centered on culture, creativity and connection. The event features spoken word poetry, cultural performances, film screenings, local vendors and hands-on activities highlighting Black creativity and storytelling.
