Birmingham’s Vulcan statue is one of the city’s most recognizable landmarks. Standing atop Red Mountain, the Roman god of fire and metalworking represents the region’s iron industry.

To recreate the look, wear gray clothing and use cardboard to make a hammer. Add gray face paint or silver accessories to complete the costume.

  • Estimated cost: $5–$15.

2. The Yellowhammer, Alabama’s state bird

Alabama’s official state bird is the yellowhammer, also known as the northern flicker. Its yellow and black markings make it a fun option for anyone looking for a colorful costume.

Start with a yellow outfit, then add black feather shapes made from construction paper or felt. A headband with a homemade beak can bring the look together.

  • What you’ll need: Yellow shirt and pants, black and yellow construction paper or felt, a headband, tape and glue.
  • Estimated cost: $8–$18.

3. A slice of Lane cake

Did you know Lane cake is Alabama’s official state cake? The dessert originated in Clayton and became the state’s official cake in 2016.

For this costume, turn yourself into a giant slice of cake using cardboard and a little creativity. Paint the cardboard to resemble layers of cake and frosting, then attach straps so you can wear it over your clothes.
