15 new million-dollar construction permits approved in Alabama, January 29th

15 New Construction Permits in Alabama
Last week, a total of 15 new permits (13 commercial and 2 residential) were awarded to contractors on projects over a million dollars. Each week, our friends at Southern Exposure Information pull together information from building permits in order to view the full picture of construction throughout the state. Each week, we’ll take a closer look at a number of new construction projects from this list. Here’s what’s happening this week.
Keep an eye on these 3 multi million dollar projects
1. Project Magic — $36.9M
- Project Cost: $36,928,000
- Project Address: 7600 Crestwood Boulevard, Birmingham, Project Magic Delivery Station, 35210
- Project: A commercial remodel/expansion for the new Amazon Delivery Station
- Owner of Project: Century Plaza Co.
- Contractor/Builder: Brasfield & Gorrie, LLC
In 1975, the 743,785 square-foot, two level, enclosed shopping mall known as Century Plaza opened in Birmingham to a great reception. For decades, Alabamians came from all around to shop at stores like Sears, JC Penny, Pizitz and more. But by 2009, dwindling shoppers forced the mall to close for good.
Flash forward to 2020. In May, Bham Now reported that the Birmingham City Council announced their plans to redevelop the Century Plaza site. Dubbed “Project Magic”, the redevelopment of the site will serve as a 201,475-square-foot delivery center for Amazon, Inc.
2. Grandview Medical Center Addition — $50M

- Project Address: 3680 Grandview Parkway, Birmingham, AL 35243
- Project: Grandview Physicians Plaza II (200,000 square-foot Medical Office Building & Parking Deck)
- Owner of Project: Daniel Corporation.
- Contractor/Builder: Brasfield & Gorrie, LLC
Grandview Medical Center, the 434-bed hospital located on Highway 280 in Birmingham, is taking a big leap forward with the construction of their Physicians Plaza II. Located at the former site of the Riverpoint Building, Physicians Plaza II is an upcoming 155,000-square-foot, seven-story medical office building that is projected to add 500 new jobs to the area. In 2020, representatives of Grandview Medical Center, Daniel Corporation and Brasfield & Gorrie were joined by Governor Kay Ivey to break ground on the project in October of 2020. Once complete, Grandview Medical Center estimates that the project will cost a total of $50M.
In addition to Project Magic, the Grandview Medical Center expansion and other projects throughout their reach, Brasfield & Gorrie are in the midst of an ongoing, million-dollar-plus renovation of their campus in downtown Birmingham.
3. Vitality Senior Living Facility in Huntsville — $25.6M
- Project Cost: $25,671,030
- Project Address: 1200 Enterprise Way Northwest, Huntsville, AL 35806
- Project: A new senior living facility in Huntsville.
- Owner of Project: NIC Huntsville Senior, LLC
- Contractor/Builder: Deangelis Diamond Construction, LLC
In Huntsville, Deangelis Diamond Construction, LLC is working on a $25.6M project along Enterprise Way. Located across the highway from Top Golf, the project will eventually be home to a new Vitality Senior Living facility. Currently, Hemma Concrete, Inc. is laying the foundation for the development.
