A new proposal is expected to get official approval from the Mobile City Council, taking another step in a highly anticipated project that has been discussed for years.

The St. Louis Street Project would address several infrastructure issues in a 17-block stretch of the historic street in downtown Mobile. Construction would include:

  • Roadbeds
  • Sidewalks
  • Storm drainage
  • Streetscape
  • Utility

The city hopes construction will begin next year with the project slated to be completed in 2028. Keep reading to learn more about the proposed project + see what the changes could look like.

The city says this initiative is in partnership with broader objectives to bring further business development and economic revitalization within the area.

Discussions around a reconstruction project at St. Louis Street has been happening for several years. The 17-block stretch of road goes from the intersection with Broad Street to the intersection with Water Street.

Landscape improvements will be the most noticeable for people in cars, on bicycles or on foot. Once completed, the street will have:

  • 77 trees (47 are new)
  • 1,335 shrubs/perennials
  • 1,380 groundcover plants

More than 20 intersections will change from traffic signals to four-way stops. The road will also receive updated surfacing and lane striping.

New curbs and gutters will improve infrastructure efficiency when dealing with stormwater runoff including new drainage outlets to prevent ponding on the street.

The project is expected to be funded from various sources including the RESTORE Act, Downtown TIF program, stormwater fees, the City’s general fund and other sources.
