WalletHub has released its annual list of best run cities in America and two spots in the southern third of our state were ranked in the top 60.

Mobile led the way, coming in at No. 24 on the national list + Montgomery finished at No. 58. Birmingham was the only other Alabama city to make the list, ranked at No. 132.

“The best-run cities in America use their budgets most effectively to provide high-quality financial security, education, health, safety and transportation to their residents. Many of the top cities also have a very low amount of outstanding government debt per capita, which can prevent financial troubles in the future.”

WalletHub’s annual rankings is based on a formula measuring the effectiveness of local leadership.

The formula includes several factors including:

  • Financial stability
  • Education
  • Health
  • Safety
  • Economy
  • Infrastructure + pollution
  • Budget per capita

For the rankings, the company looked at 148 of the biggest cities in the country.

Mobile’s top 25 ranking was in large part due to ranking 14th in budget per capita. The city ranked 35th in education but in quality of overall city services, Mobile was 94th.

Montgomery ranked 21st in budget per capita, helping it overcome its quality of city services ranking which was 131 out of 148.
