2 Alabama cities selected for Bloomberg’s sustainability program
Just 25 towns from around the country have been selected for the Bloomberg American Sustainable Cities program and two of them are right here in Alabama.
Birmingham and Montgomery made the final cut and both cities will now receive support from Bloomberg Philanthropies to bolster city capacity in driving progress on climate mitigation and promoting equitable outcomes.
Keep reading to find out more about why the two cities were selected + how they could benefit from the program.
Bloomberg American Sustainable Cities
The Infrastructure Law and Inflation Reduction Act have made over $400 billion in federal funding available to local governments to invest in revitalized infrastructure and bold climate action. The Bloomberg program is helping to make some of those funds available to certain cities.
Launched in March 2024, this three-year initiative is supposed to leverage historic levels of federal funding and proactively build low-carbon, resilient, and economically thriving communities.
Potential projects in the 25 cities include:
- Developing affordable energy-efficient housing
- Increasing access to clean energy
- Investing in electric vehicles and infrastructure
Birmingham + Montgomery
“This selection is a testament to our community’s resilience, innovation, and determination to build a sustainable future for all of our residents. Through this initiative, Montgomery will be empowered to design and implement transformative solutions to address climate change, enhance our economic opportunities, and strengthen our neighborhoods.”
~ Steven Reed, Mayor of Montgomery
The two cities will receive multi-year, tailored support to design, develop, and implement climate change and equity solutions. The program will collaborate closely with community partners to ensure the creation of climate resilient neighborhoods that benefit all residents.
Bloomberg Philanthropies will fund up to three dedicated innovation staff members. These teams, working under the guidance of the mayor, will support city hall and community partners in launching interventions to drive climate mitigation progress and promote equitable outcomes.
