For the second straight season, Alabama stars are shining bright on The Voice stage.

After Jazz McKenzie made it all the way to the finale last year, Alexia Jayy and Bay Simpson are hoping to follow that path. They took another big step in that direction during this week’s episode of the Season 29 “Battles” episode.

Jayy and Simpson are both on Adam Levine’s team. The Maroon 5 lead singer had some tough decisions to make but decided to take both Alabama singers with him to the next round.

Keep reading to watch both performances + see what Levine had to say about the duo.

Bay Simpson

Simpson, a Muscle Shoals native, was competing against teammate Hunter Jordan as the duo sang “I’m The Problem” by Morgan Wallen. The two singers took different approaches to it with Jordan singing with a more classic country voice while Simpson took a soulful angle.

Levine told the other coaches he would need help with this decision but even they were split after the performance with Kelly Clarkson choosing Jordan while John Legend was leaning toward Simpson.

“Your voice is a little weird in a very cool way… I loved how different it felt.”

John Legend

Clarkson said both would be superstars but in very different ways.

Eventually, it came time for Levine to make the decision on his own and he went with Simpson.

“I thought that I was going to go with Hunter the whole time. Bay just takes things and does things that make my soul feel good.”

Simpson advances to the knockout rounds which are scheduled to being March 30 on NBC.

“I feel amazing. I wanted to be the surprise. I wanted to be able to show another tool that I have.”

Alexia Jayy

Levine had another tough decision to wrap up the first episode of the Battles round.

Jayy, who is from Mobile, sang “Nightshift” by The Commodores with fellow competitor Moses G. And the performance got a standing ovation from all three judges.

“Alexia, the low part of your voice is so beautiful. The rasp in your voice, you’re just such a soulful, beautiful vocalist. I’m still very upset you’re not on my team.”

John Legend

And while the coaches praised both singers, it was clear who the favorite was.

“That ache in your voice is this beautiful mix of singing but like preaching and talking. Every part of the message, you realize you’re a vessel for something bigger than yourself. It is so well done. I’m a giddy little school kid every time you come on stage.”

Kelly Clarkson

Levine doubled down on that message to Jayy, saying that her voice makes him want to cry before selecting her as the winner of the battle. The coach said he feels Jayy could win the whole competition.

Before the episode wrapped up, Legend used a ‘steal’ on Moses G, allowing both singers to advance to the next round.

The Voice Season 29

There will be one more episode of the Battles round before moving on to the knockout shows. Each coach will take six artists into the next round, once again pitting two of them against each other with only one able to advance.

The Knockouts begin on March 30 on NBC. 10 total artists are expected to advance from the knockouts to the live playoff round.
