An Alabama southern summer isn’t complete without a good seafood boil or some fried shrimp.

Mashed, an online platform focusing on all things food and how-to, has named two small-town Alabama cities, Coden and Bayou La Batre, as the ultimate jackpot for seafood.

Keep reading to learn more about these two iconic cities.

Coden—your one-stop shop for Gulf-flavors

Coden is a quiet, serene town located on Portersville Bay and happens to be home to big seafood companies like Johnson Sea Products.

This unincorporated community fishing village lies right across from the Mississippi Sound and Dauphin Island. With a population of only 2,000, Coden still manages to have some big hits in the seafood realm.

According to Mashed, Capt Jim’s Seafood is a popular spot in Coden known for its shrimp, crab cakes and grilled fish.

Along with Capt Jim’s Seafood, Bayou Catalina has also been recognized for their flavorful and fresh seafood and friendly service.

BONUS: While you’re deep-sea diving for some good eats, make sure to visit Coden’s newest public beach and recently reopened Bayfront Park.

Bayou La Batre

The local Chamber of Commerce in Bayou La Batre has coined this fishing village as the “Seafood Capital of Alabama.”

With shrimp making up 90% of the value of all seafood landed locally, Bayou La Batre has a number of amazing places to grab shrimp and grits, oysters and everything in between.

With a population of around 2,155, this small city attracts tourists to the many sites, such as the shipyards and beautiful water.

What truly makes this little town so special is the various shipyards and ship-building sites, with one even building Walt Disney’s The Black Pearl ship seen in Pirates of the Caribbean.

If you’re heading this way, be sure to stop at the Bayou Seafood Company for some incredible gumbo. Want to cherish some fresh seafood for when you go home? Also check out Junior Barbour Seafood and Sea Pearl Seafood.
