After two student magazines were defunded by the University of Alabama last year, there was a gap in student media that needed to be filled.
“Alice” and “Nineteen Fifty-Six” published their final issues in December 2025. Shortly after that, the nonprofit Masthead stepped in to start fundraising efforts to create a new space for student journalists.
Now, Masthead has announced it will be funding two new ventures this spring dedicated to news at the University of Alabama.

The two new magazines will center around the same themes as previous university publications.
The name for the women’s magazine is Selene, inspired by the mythological Greek titan of the moon. It will take place of the previous magazine, “Alice.”
Sixty-Three will take place of the Nineteen Fifty-Six magazine, focusing on the Black experience at the university. The name comes from the year 1963 which was when Vivian Jones and James hood became the first Black students to successfully enroll at the school.
Both publications are Mastheaded-funded with help from the $28,000 raised during the campaign in December 2025.
“We’ve established five committees within the MASTHEAD umbrella to support our operations and provide a foundation for the student journalists in Tuscaloosa to thrive.
“Our Advising and Mentoring committee works closely with the publications for daily logistical needs and editorial guidance. We have experienced media professionals on the ground in Tuscaloosa to provide support when needed.”

The organization hopes this quick move will allow former students journalists at “Alice” and “Nineteen Fifty-Six” to maintain their publication schedule moving forward.
