$220 million FBI Innovation Center breaks ground in Huntsville

On June 30th, Alabama Senators Tommy Tuberville and Richard Shelby met with officials from the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the United States Army at Huntsville’s Redstone Arsenal to celebrate the FBI’s $1.3 billion investment at Redstone Arsenal. Once complete, the sprawling campus center could create hundreds of new jobs in Alabama.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation in Huntsville

The FBI—yes, the Federal Bureau of Investigation—is in the process of constructing a sprawling “Science and Technology District” campus inside Huntsville’s Redstone Arsenal. Although the FBI has had a presence at Redstone Arsenal for over 40 years, the Bureau is planning on drastically ramping up their operations in Huntsville over the next few years. Currently, several FBI operations—including the Hazardous Devices School and the Terrorist Explosive Device Analytical Center—call Huntsville home.

At the center of the Science and Technology District will be the FBI Innovation Center, a 250,000-square-foot flagship facility dedicated to “cyber threat intelligence, data analytics, and training to combat emerging threats”. The building will serve as the FBI’s technical hub, where multiple technology-focused divisions of the Bureau can come together to train and combat potential cyber-security threats.

As the centerpiece of the district, the Innovation Center will be a key part of the FBI’s $1 billion dollar investment at Redstone Arsenal. The three-story Innovation Center will include a number of high-tech facilities, including:

• A kinetic cyber range
• A virtual reality classroom
• Multi-purpose classrooms with enhanced audio and visual capabilities
• Labs and workspaces
• And much more!

Leading the design aspect of the project is HKS Architects, an international architectural firm headquartered in Dallas, Texas. Bethesda, Maryland-based Clark Construction Group will be working alongside HKS Architects on the project, which is expected to be completed in 2023.
