$3.7M in arts grants distributed to strengthen Alabama’s creative communities

The Alabama State Council on the Arts has announced it is investing $3.76 million of grant money into different projects + organizations across the state.

The money will be spread across 176 different organizations, supporting a wide range of initiatives from local theater productions to cultural festivals. The council believes the funding will have long-lasting effects that will be felt in arts communities across the state.

“Public funding is essential in fostering a thriving arts ecosystem, and we are proud to support organizations that enrich the lives of Alabamians through creativity. We encourage members of the public to explore upcoming events and artistic programs in their local communities and experience how these investments contribute to the quality of life in our state.”

There are a total of 221 grants include 29 for general operating support for different partners + arts education programs along with another 145 grants awarded to support specific projects.

Some of the largest grants included:

  • Birmingham Museum of Art: $140,000
  • Amp Up Arts: $140,000
  • Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts: $115,000
  • Alabama Dance Council: $110,000
  • Red Mountain Theatre: $100,000
  • The Alabama Writers’ Forum: $100,000
  • Alabama Arts Alliance: $100,000

The grants above were awarded for the 2026 fiscal year after all applications were reviewed by Council on the Arts staff for eligibility, a panel of peers from the artistic and creative sector, the Grants Review Committee of the Council and by the full 15-member Council.

The Council on the Arts is the official state agency for the support and development of the arts in Alabama. The council “works to expand and preserve the state’s cultural resources by supporting nonprofit arts organizations, schools, colleges, units of local government, and individual artists.”

Arts programs, assisted by Council grants, have a track record of enhancing community development, education, cultural tourism, and overall quality of life in all regions of the state.
