3 Alabama colleges among state’s winners at 2025 Southeast Emmys

Journalists, content creators and media members from across the region gathered in Atlanta over the weekend to celebrate the 2025 Southeast Emmys.

Our state was well represented both in the nominations + on the stage throughout the event. Winners included:

  • ABC 33/40
  • Alabama Media Group
  • Alabama Public Television
  • Auburn University
  • Champ Creative
  • Jacksonville State University
  • University of Alabama

Public broadcasting

From the host to award presenters to winners, one theme of the night was why publicly-funded media and content is so important.

That showed up in the number of public media won Emmy awards this year including several from Alabama. APT, which won three Emmys last year, had seven total nominations including a pair of winners in 2025.

  • Historical/Cultural Short Form Content | “Booker T. Washington | Yellowhammer History Hunt” [WATCH]
  • Children/Youth/Teen Long Form Content | “McWane Science Center | DIY Science Time” [WATCH]

APT also assisted in other productions done on college campuses as three public schools walked away with at least one Emmy award. Those winners included:

  • Documentary: Historical | “Defending Freedom: The Arthur D. Shores Story” | Jacksonville State University [WATCH]
  • Documentary: Topical | “Riding Through History, The Barber Collection” | Jacksonville State University [WATCH]
  • Magazine Program | “Junkyard Bots” | University of Alabama [WATCH]
  • Sports Promotion – Single Spot | “A Little Auburn in Us All” | Auburn University

Auburn’s Parker Leppien was awarded an Emmy for best Live Sports Producer.

ABC 33/40, Alabama Media Group among winners

One Alabama news network walked out with an Emmy as ABC 33/40, WBMA in Birmingham, won an award for Daytime Newscast for its coverage of the mass shooting in Five Points South last year.

The Alabama Media Group also won an Emmy for outstanding Sports Interview for its one-on-one with Alabama coach Kalen DeBoer.

WTVM, which is located in Georgia but covers the area around Auburn and Opelika, won an Emmy for its 5-year-anniversary coverage of the tornado that ripped through Beauregard in 2019.
