3 Alabama hospitals named to U.S. News Best Hospitals for Maternity Care

U.S. News & World Report has released its annual rankings of best hospitals in the country for maternity care and three offices in Alabama made the list.
The list is created to aid parents-to-be in their search to find the best hospitals for an uncomplicated pregnancy. These hospitals were evaluated by different factors including:
- C-section rates
- Severe unexpected newborn complications rate
- Commitment to breast feeding
- Episiotomy rates
- Maternity care deserts
Here are the three Alabama hospitals that made the cut:
North Baldwin Infirmary in Bay Minette
The report says North Baldwin has a relatively low amount of births but still got high grades in several areas around maternity care.
The hospital ranked highly in several different factors including:
- Childbirth classes
- Private rooms offered
- Partner may stay overnight post-delivery
- Breastfeeding and lactation consultants available in hospital
- Baby-Friendly USA designation
- Perinatal + Postpartum Depression Services

The hospital is located at 1815 Hand Avenue in Bay Minette.
Thomas Hospital in Fairhope
Thomas Hospital is on Morphy Avenue, just off Highway 98 in Fairhope. It received several of the same marks as North Baldwin from the U.S. News Report.
The hospital is owned by the same company, Infirmary Health, that owns the North Baldwin Infirmary.
Some of the top marks Thomas Hospital received include:
- Childbirth classes
- Private rooms offered
- Partner may stay overnight post-delivery
- Breastfeeding and lactation consultants available in hospital
- Perinatal + Postpartum Depression Services
UAB Hospital in Birmingham
UAB is the only hospital from north or central Alabama on the list. And it also has some of the top marks of not only other hospitals in the state but also compared to many places around the country.
Several factors helped UAB make the list including:
- Childbirth classes
- Private rooms offered
- Partner may stay overnight post-delivery
- Midwives can attend births
- Neonatal Intensive Care Unit
- Breastfeeding and lactation consultants available in hospital + at home
- Baby-Friendly USA designation
- Perinatal + Postpartum Depression Services
- IUD placement immediately post-delivery
