One of my passions as a reporter and a person are obscure holidays. I love looking for a random reason to celebrate any given day. In that vein, today is National Mom & Pop Shop Business Owner Day. We’ve highlighted four local businesses in Mobile in honor of today’s holiday!

1. Dog Days Barkery

Just a few blocks away from the University of South Alabama, Dog Days Barkery is your one-stop-shop for all things Fido may need or want. There’s an awesome variety of fresh-baked dog treats, all prepared in-house by Barkery staff.

Of course, Dog Days Barkery is furry-friend welcome. They even offer treat taste-tests for your pup! If you love your dog like family, this is a great spot to get them some yummy goodies!

2. Bake My Day

If Dog Days Barkery made you hungry for some human baked-goods, look no further than Bake My Day.

This family owned and operated bakery has been a Mobile classic since 2012. They bake (from scratch) an excellent selection of delicious goodies every day. Be sure to stop by and try their famous cookies, winner of the 2020 “Best Cookies” Nappie Award.

If you’re not local to Mobile but still want to try those scrumptious cookies, no worries! Bake My Day delivers their cookies nationwide. Head over to their website to place your order and support a small Mobile business, no matter where you are.

3. Carpe Diem

A good cup of joe and great atmosphere, who could ask for more? At Carpe Diem, you can have all of that and an awesome breakfast. This quaint coffee shop off of Old Shell is a favorite study spot for University of South Alabama students and Springhill University students alike.

The intoxicating aroma of a coffee shop is only heightened by the coffee roasting, which takes place right where customers can observe. The chill yet moody atmosphere is perfect for anything from homework to catching up with an old friend.

4. Elizabeth’s Garden

Spring has officially sprung and there’s no better time than the present to plant your garden with the help of Elizabeth’s Garden in Mobile.

This cute little plant and outdoor decor shop is located off McGregor Avenue in West Mobile. Between a friendly and knowledgeable staff and the curated collection of healthy, in-season plants, Elizabeth’s Garden is the perfect starting point for your spring/summer garden this year!

If you’re looking for a florist, this is your place as well. Elizabeth’s Garden also specalizes in floral arrangements, perfect for any upcoming occassion (hint: Mother’s Day is closer than you thought)

This Mom & Pop Business Owners Day, get out in your city and celebrate all that makes it unique!
