42nd State Games: exciting competition coming this weekend

The Alabama State Games will host its 42nd edition June 13-15 in Birmingham.
The competition sees amateur athletes from across the state compete in a wide range of events, from traditional Olympic sports to some less common alternatives.
What to know
The Alabama State Games began in 1982 at the request of the United States Olympic Committee.
The first edition saw 600 athletes compete in Auburn in 1983. Today, thousands of athletes from all over the state make it the largest annual multi-sport event in the state.
Events include both team and individual sports, with several age categories in each.
Opening ceremony
The opening ceremony of the 2025 Alabama State Games will take place at 7PM Friday June 13 at the BJCC’s Legacy Arena. It will be televised live statewide.
Check-in for athletes will start at 3PM. Athletes will be split into four groups based on region of residence.
Additional events will take place in the build-up to the 7PM athletes’ parade. They include the State Farm Athlete Leadership Summit, held in the North Exhibition Hall of the BJCC, which awards 12 $1,000 scholarships to select competitors.
Additional scholarships will be awarded at the conclusion of the parade as part of the Games’ efforts to include all state athletes regardless of financial background.
Sporting events
This year’s Games feature 24 sports for local athletes to compete in.
Traditional sports such as soccer, baseball and tennis are included, but also some more unique events. Athletes have the opportunity to compete in baton twirling, disc golf and ninja challenge, among others.
