Why do people choose to ring in the New Year watching a ball drop in chilly New York City, when they can see a moonpie, squirrel, marlin, beach ball or cougar (lantern) drop right here in Alabama?

Now, that’s a choice!

Want to know more? Here is a list of Alabama NYE drops to close out 2025 and ring in 2026.

Moonpie Over Mobile Drop

Named USA Today’s 4th best NYE drop in the U.S., Mobile has been dropping a 600 pound electric MoonPie from the 34-story RSA BankTrust since 2008. Over 50,000 people regularly attend this pre-Mardi Gras celebration.

Added bonus: Morris Day and The Time are playing before the big drop!

5th Annual Squirrel Drop – Piedmont, Alabama

Who’s ready to see “Sparky the Squirrel” drop at midnight in Downtown Piedmont, Alabama?

This “drop” was established by the Piedmont Arts and Entertainment Committee five years ago. Can’t make it to the small Northeast Alabama town for NYE? Buy a t-shirt, which supports the annual event.

LuLu’s Beach Ball Drop in Gulf Shores

Trying to avoid a late night out on the town? LuLu’s in Gulf Shores is celebrating NYE early beginning at 10:00AM and ending at 1:00PM.

There will be a sand castle building contest and—most importantly—a “drop” of several hundred beach balls.

Marlin Drop – Reelin’ in the New Year—Orange Beach

Need a good excuse to visit The Wharf over the New Year’s Day holiday? How about taking in some tunes and watching a Marlin drop? Now that’s original.

Visit The Wharf at Gulf Shores and Orange Beach and attend the annual Reelin’ in the New Year party.

From live bands and family-friendly activities to a grand fireworks finale and marlin drop at midnight (yes, a jumbo fake marlin fish drops from the sky), it’s an unbeatable way to reel in 2023.

Birmingham Zoo Cougar Countdown

Get an early start to 2026 with two NYE drops at 2:00PM and 6:00PM at the Birmingham Zoo. The drop includes a giant lantern featuring cougars specifically created for the celebrations by the artisans behind Glow Wild, Hanart. Check out the family-friendly cougar countdown activities before and after each drop – HERE.
