The Whitfield-Searcy House in Opelika

This gorgeous Victorian house in Opelika was built in 1895 + housed the Opelika Chamber of Commerce from 1987 until 2024. In the early 1900s, it was home to a five-year-old girl that passed due to Hay fever. After her death, many people reported seeing child-size footsteps on the property’s stairs — footsteps that would reappear even after being wiped off.
More paranormal sightings in the house have occurred, such as a fireball of light barreling down the stairs, objects + chairs moving on their own + a local painter who felt as though he was pushed when there was no one (that he could see) around.

Pine Hill Cemetery in Auburn

Pine Hill Cemetery is Auburn’s oldest cemetery, so it’s no wonder locals have reported suspicious activity here. Nearby residents claimed to have seen a ghostly woman perched on a tombstone with her head in her hands. There have also been sightings of a black shadow stalking visitors of the cemetery.

Samford Hall in Auburn

Most people remain unaware that Samford Hall, one of Auburn University’s most beloved buildings, was at one point used as a makeshift hospital for soldiers in the Civil War. As legend has it, a Civil-War era doctor lurks through the halls at night. If you listen closely, you might hear his footsteps pacing on the grounds + second and third floors.
A soldier has also been seen surveying Samford Lawn from his post at the top of the clock-tower.

Auburn University Chapel in Auburn

If you’ve ever been on a tour of Auburn University, you’ll have heard the stories guides have to tell of the haunted University Chapel. Constructed in 1851, the chapel is the oldest building in its original location on campus; just like Samford Hall, it was also used as a hospital for Civil War soldiers.
The chapel is suspected to be the home of Sydney Grimmlett, a Civil War soldier. Prior to the 1973 construction of the Telfair B. Peet Theatre, theater students utilized the chapel as a playhouse. Those who attended the plays are said to have seen glowing balls of light hovering over the actors performing.

The train tracks in Opelika

Tandy Key, an avid gambler, is believed to be the ghost that has haunted the Opelika train tracks since his untimely death in 1853. Although his cause of death is unknown, people have speculated that he either passed due to alcohol poisoning — or was murdered after a brawl over a card game.
Despite being buried in Salem, Ala., Key traveled to Opelika often. Rumor has it that his spirit can be seen stumbling along the Opelika train tracks, looking for someone to gamble with.
