There have been several updates over the last few months about the future of Big Lots including the most recent list of closures and stores up for sale.

The company declared bankruptcy in 2024, announcing all of its stores were to close. But now, there’s some hope for Big Lots shoppers.

And while many stores across the state have already closed, there will still be some locations that could continue operations for those looking to get their Big Lots fix.

Variety Wholesalers

While the store’s website signals all stores will close, a recent report from Fast Company said Variety Wholesalers will take over some of the company’s stores and operate them under the same Big Lots brand.

Six of those stores are right here in Alabama with locations in:

  • Athens
  • Cullman
  • Decatur
  • Jasper
  • Mobile
  • Northport

However, there is still no clear timeline on when those stores will open under the new ownership.

“The locations that do ultimately move forward are likely to be dark for a period of weeks or even months following the transfer of their leases as Variety determines what preparations or alterations are needed for each location.”
