Looking for a way to localize your spooky season?
Grab some popcorn plus a blanket to cover your eyes as needed and check out one of these seven thrilling movies that were filmed right here in Alabama.
Get Out (2017)
The disturbingly twisted film directed by Jordan Peele was mostly filmed in Fairhope and Mobile.
The opening scene, in which a Black man is abducted, was filmed on Ryan Avenue and De Leon Avenue, a small neighborhood intersection right off Old Shell Road.
Another scene where the main character wakes up strapped to a chair was filmed at Barton Academy in Mobile.
The family’s home was filmed at a house on Heathcroft Lane in Fairhope.
Gerald’s Game (2017)

Gerald’s Game, the film adaptation of Stephen King’s 1992 novel, can be considered a Mobile gem. Producer Scott Lumpkin said that at least 85-90% of the film was shot inside the Mobile Civic Center.
The movie was not just filmed in Alabama but the fictional setting is also Fairhope as a couple tries to escape every day life with a romantic getaway to a hidden gem in Alabama.
As with many Stephen King movies, the mind-bending film has a mix of jump-scare scenes with some visually upsetting content. This one could keep you up at night.
Hush (2016)
The silence of the movie keeps you on the edge of your seat.
In similar fashion, there are not many times you can see the filming locations while watching the movie but director Mike Flanagan once again chose areas around Mobile and Fairhope to shoot this movie.
Flanagan reportedly changed parts of the movie’s plot to more closely fit the main house that was chosen for filming.
“It was out in the middle of the woods, pretty much as you see it, and we had to rewrite the script—and even change some big, serious plot developments—to accommodate the reality of that house. But it also gave us a lot; our house didn’t have a crawlspace, it wasn’t elevated the way this one was, and that gave us a huge new setpiece that wasn’t there before. So as many problems as it created, it also gave us a lot of opportunities too.”

Friday the 13th Part VII (1988)
One of the biggest horror franchises of all time shot several scenes from its New Blood movie.
It’s certainly not one of the most popular films from the franchise but there’s still plenty of fright provided and of course, the iconic Jason.
In 1987, Hollywood came to Baldwin County, but no one had a clue. Directors wanted to keep filming a secret and they did a pretty good job at it.
The Baldwin County boat launch became the infamous “Camp Crystal Lake” where one of the most iconic villains wreaks havoc.
Byrnes Lake wasn’t the only Alabama spot to get some screen time. Some of the water scenes were also filmed in Malibu Canyon Creek closer to Mobile.
Body Snatchers (1993)

This movie follows a father-daughter duo during an alien invasion at a military base in Alabama.
It was mostly filmed at the Craig Air Force Base just outside of Selma, now known as the Craig Field Airport and Industrial Complex.
Oculus (2013)
The movie follows a girl who is trying to prove her brother’s innocence after their parents are supposedly killed by a mirror possessed by a supernatural entity.
If you like jump scares, this may be the movie for you. There are not many spots you can see the surrounding areas but most of the movie was filmed around Mobile and Fairhope.
Filming reportedly took just three weeks, officially wrapping on Oct. 27, 2012.
The Final Destination (2009)

While it’s widely considered the weakest of the franchise’s movies, The Final Destination opens with a scene shot in Alabama that became the defining scene for the film.
It may be predictable but the movie includes another massive car crash, this time at a racing event.
The fictional McKinley Speedway was actually the Mobile International Speedway.
