Plan to travel on Alabama’s roads this coming Independence Day holiday week?

The bad news? It is probably going to be very crowded on the roadways.

The good news? Gas prices across Alabama are down 15 cents from last month, according to AAA Alabama.

“We’re gonna see the busiest Independence Day travel weekend of all time with almost 71 million people traveling nationwide a distance of 50 miles or more.

That’s a 5% increase from last year and an 8% increase over 2019, which holds the record for the busiest Independence Day holiday travel of all time.”

One of the reasons AAA is bullish about holiday travel this year is because gas prices have been remarkably stable this summer.

Below are the latest gas prices (June 24) throughout Alabama from AAA Alabama:

Total — National Average on June 24, 2024: 3.45

Total — Alabama Average on June 24, 2024: 3.09

Total — Alabama Average on May 24, 2024: 3:24

Total — Alabama Average on June 24, 2023: 3.14

Gas prices average for select counties:

  • Madison County — 3.12
  • DeKalb County — 3.00
  • Morgan County —3.00
  • Jefferson County — 3.13
  • Shelby County — 3.05
  • Tuscaloosa County — 3.02
  • Sumter County — 3.22
  • Montgomery County — 3.10
  • Lee County — 3.02
  • Mobile County — 3.00
  • Baldwin County — 3.04
  • Pike County — 3.16
  • Houston County — 3.04

“It’s a little surprising to see these prices dropping this time of year.

Normally, in the heart of the summer travel season we see prices up there pretty high. To see these prices dropping over the last few weeks has been a very welcome surprise.”

Tips for saving gas over the holiday

If you are on a budget this Independence holiday season, AAA Alabama does have a few cost-saving recommendations.

Get your car checked out in advance and use a certified technician to examine:

  1. Tire tread
  2. Tire pressure
  3. Fluid levels

In addition to getting your car checked out, driving conservatively in the right lane at the speed limit is not only safer, but according to AAA studies can save between 15-20% in auto costs.
