AAA: “Travel is back” with Alabama gas prices $1 lower this Memorial Day than in 2022

Gas prices are down in Alabama a dollar a gallon compared to 2022 prices, according to AAA of Alabama.

Entering Memorial Day weekend 2023, the average gallon of regular gas in the Yellowhammer state is $3.15 compared to $4.30 on May 26, 2022.

Record Travel Expected

As a result of the lower prices, AAA of Alabama expects automobile travel to reach record levels this summer.

“Travel is back!”  exclaimed Clay Ingram, public relations and marketing manager at AAA Alabama in an interview with The Bama Buzz.

“People are chomping at the bit to go somewhere. Memorial Day is, as usual the unofficial kickoff for the summer travel season. We’re anticipating 42.3 million people traveling a distance of 50 miles or more across the country this coming weekend and that looks to be the third busiest Memorial Day weekend of all time. 2023 could turn out to be the busiest travel year of all time.”

What’s fueling summer travel in 2023?  Lower gas prices.

“We were well over $4 a gallon this time last year,” added Ingram. “It’s a big difference and a welcome sight to see prices this low during the Memorial Day weekend because there’ll be a number of stations that will probably be below $3 a gallon.”

Gas prices do vary across Alabama. Here are the latest AAA figures as of May 26th for regular gas.:

• Daphne/Fairhope/Foley – $3.18

• Dothan – $3.16

• Montgomery – $3.15
• Tuscaloosa – $3.17

Find the Lowest Prices

To help lower prices, AAA encourages drivers to shop around for the lowest prices. 

For example, prices may vary 20-30 cents in some communities.
