Alabama author has book showcased at Library of Congress National Book Festival

Alabama author Jennifer Hallman continues to gain local + national attention for her book How Mae Got Moxie.

Earlier this year, the book was the 2026 Alabama Center for the Book Great Reads from Great Places. Now, the book has become the state’s selection for the Library of Congress National Book Festival.

The 26th annual National Book Festival was held Aug. 22 in Washington D.C., featuring works from all 50 states.

How Mae Got Moxie by Jennifer Hallman

How Mae Got Moxie by Jennifer Hallman is a book created 100% in Alabama. It is illustrated by Birmingham-based illustrator Rachael Smithson. Editing and publishing of the book were spearheaded by Village Editorial and printing was completed in Homewood at Rocky Heights Print & Binding.

Through the story of Mae, a shy hedgehog who learns to embrace who she is, the book’s goal is to inspire children to be kind, bold and be themselves.

The book’s previously-earned recognition has included:

• Recognized by the National Federation of Press Women, ranking second in the National Children’s Fiction Contest
• Earned first place for the 2025 Alabama Media Professionals Communications Contest

The book, which launched in 2025, is now in 25 schools (and counting). Hallman has presented the book and its values to more than 6,000 students at elementary schools, teaching them about “The Mae Way.”

Some of the key focal points include:

• Integrates STEAM & creative learning
• Promotes kindness, confidence, literacy, and growth
• Offered as classroom, assembly, and school-wide programs
• Drives literacy engagement, interaction, and school culture
• Features interactive stories and creative, hands-on activities
• Reminds children their origins don’t limit their potential

At the 2025 Regions Tradition event, participants of all ages created over 300 heartfelt cards for patients at Children’s of Alabama, continuing the book’s growing legacy of compassion and connection.
