Alabama commit Trent Seaborn sets new AHSAA passing record

Trent Seaborn was just an 8th grader when he got his first start for the Thompson High School football team but he quickly became one of the most talked about quarterbacks across the country.

Four years later, Seaborn is in his fifth season as the starter. He already has three state titles under his belt and the Warriors are the overwhelming favorites to win again in Class 6A this season.

Seaborn is committed to Alabama but before getting to Tuscaloosa, Seaborn is writing his name in the Alabama High School Athletic Association (AHSAA) record books.

Seaborn becomes second QB to pass for 11,000 yards

During Thompson’s blowout win over Vestavia Hills, Seaborn became the second ever quarterback to reach the 11,000-yard mark through the air, joining former Piedmont star Jack Hayes.

Later in the game, Seaborn broke Hayes’ record for most career passing yards in AHSAA history. Here’s what the top five looks like now:

• 11,024: Jack Hayes, Piedmont (2018-22)
• 10,774: Jamarcus Russell, Williamson (1999-2002)
• 10,386: Bo Nix, Pinson Valley (2015-18)
• 10,385: Chris Smelley, American Christian (2002-05)

Seaborn needed less than 900 yards this season to reach the top spot so it was more a matter of when, not if, he would set the record. And he needed just three games to claim the record.

Last season, Seaborn threw for a career-high 3,692 yards which is the 11th most in a single season in AHSAA history.

Seaborn entered his senior season already holding the record for most career completions with 774.

Can anyone catch Seaborn’s record?

By the time this season is wrapped up, Seaborn could surpass the 13,000-yard mark, putting him well above every other name in the record book.

So how long could that record hold up? The only other active player on the current list from the AHSAA is Selma quarterback Kole Moody.

He is another quarterback who got started as an eighth grader and threw for 6,565 yards in two seasons with Southside Selma. Now, he is leading the cross-town rival Selma Saints under coach Charles Moody who is Kole’s father.

Kole Moody was recently named among the 100 athletes to watch across the country by MaxPreps.

If he keeps up his pace, Moody would be the next biggest threat to overtake the all-time passing yards record.
