It first happened in 2023. Then again in 2024.

Now, it’s officially a three-peat and I think it’s safe to call it a dynasty.

The Hugh S. Branyon Backcountry Trail at Gulf State Park has been selected as the nation’s best recreational trail by USA Today for the third straight year.

“This year’s win is especially exciting as we celebrate the Year of Alabama Trails. We are honored that USA Today’s readers chose the Hugh S. Branyon Backcountry Trail for a third straight year. The trail provides access to some of the most unique habitats and recreational opportunities in Gulf State Park and along Alabama’s coast.”

Matthew Capps, State Parks Director for the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources

The trail was among 20 nominees selected by USA Today then voted on by readers.

“You’re spoiled for choice at the Hugh S. Branyon Backcountry Trail complex, which offers 26 trails across nine different ecosystems. You can trek through wildflowers and tall pines on the Rosemary Dunes trail, take in the views from the overlook on the Gulf Oak Ridge trail, and enjoy the abundance of complex amenities, like the Butterfly Garden and the Pavilion.”

USA Today 10Best

It’s a combined 29 miles of trail, winding through nine unique ecosystems and coming together with the beachfront of Gulf Shores, Gulf State Park + Orange Beach.

While this is technically one trail, there are 27 different landmarks along the trail—like Gopher Tortoise Trail, where you can spot Gopher Tortoises and alligators.

Some stretches are paved and others are not. The trail is mixed-use; so you can hike, ride a bike or just enjoy a stroll through nature.
