Alabama introducing state’s 7th area code in 2026
Reading time: 2 minutes

If you’ve been in Alabama long enough, you can recognize an in-state area code whenever it comes across your phone.
But soon, there will be another area code you’ll have to add on the list to remember.
The Alabama Public Service Commission (APSC) announced the new area code 483 will be introduced in February 2026. The area code will overlay parts of the 334 area code, covering areas including:
- Auburn
- Dothan
- Enterprise
- Eufaula
- Montgomery
- Opelika
- Phenix City
- Selma
- Troy
If you have a 334 number, it will not change but any additional or new customers could be assigned a 334 number.
10-digit dialing

The APSC is encouraging customers to begin the 10-digit dialing before the 483 area code officially arrives on Feb. 23, 2026.
The hope is to allow an adjustment period before the mandatory 10-digit dialing window begins on Jan. 23, 2026.
Officials say the numbering resources for the 334 area code are scheduled to run out by the third quarter of 2026.
Alabama’s area codes

This is officially the seventh area code for the state and third overlay.
It’s the first change since 2019 when the 659 area code was added for central Alabama numbers, overlaying the 205 area code.
The full list includes:
- 205 (659 overlay)
- 256 (938 overlay)
- 334 (483 overlay)
- 251
