André Holland is supporting his hometown of Bessemer by helping to restore its historic Lincoln Theatre. First opened in 1948, it became an important spot for African-American moviegoers to see first-run movies often not shown elsewhere in Birmingham.

Holland and his family created the non-profit Holland Project in 2017 and purchased the theatre to ensure it’s restored as a public event space and cultural asset for Bessemer and the larger Birmingham community. It also serves as a connection to the actor’s father, Donald, who passed away in 2022.

“My dad would take me to a barbershop next to the Lincoln Theatre as a kid, but the building was all boarded up. When I asked, he told me it used to be the only theatre in the area that Black people could go to.

He told me that he had his first dates at the theatre, and I’ve been fascinated with it ever since. When the building was listed for sale a few years ago, my dad helped me get in touch with the owner to buy it.”

The group is currently raising funds for the theatre’s stabilization and preservation, as well as other historic buildings nearby. You can learn more about Bessemer’s Lincoln Theatre and help fund its progress at AlabamaLincoln.com.

Birmingham will be watching and cheering for Holland as his career continues to grow and his roots in Alabama remain strong.
