There is good news and bad news for drivers looking to hit the road for a long weekend.

As Labor Day approaches, gas prices in Alabama have stayed steady around $3.70 per gallon over the last month, which is nearly a full dollar higher than it was for Labor Day weekend in 2025.

However, the good news is Alabama’s prices remain well below the national average.

How Alabama prices compare to the rest of the country

According to AAA, Alabama had the seventh least expensive gas market in the U.S. in August. Here is the average price for a gallon of gas in our state as of Sep. 2:

Regular: $3.76
Mid-grade: $4.24
Premium: $4.65
Diesel: $5.43

The national average currently sits at $4.12 for a gallon of regular gas, the highest it has ever been at the start of September.

Alabama gas prices by metro areas

The common theme is gas prices get a little bit cheaper in the northern half of the state. The metro with the lowest average price for a gallon of regular gas is currently Decatur.
