Alabama remains in bracket but falls to No. 10 in latest College Football Playoff rankings
Reading time: 3 minutes

After Saturday’s loss to Oklahoma, Alabama is officially back on the bubble for the College Football Playoff.
While the Tide still controls its own destiny in the SEC, a potential at-large bid would almost certainly come with some controversy.
Tuesday night showed us just how much weight the CFP committee put on Alabama’s recent loss + how its resume now stacks up against other 2-loss teams in the country.
CFP Top 25
Alabama officially came in at No. 10 in the latest ranking, falling six spots from last week’s top 25. The Tide is currently in the last at-large spot in the field.
With the ranking, the Crimson Tide loses its bye to the quarterfinals in the latest bracket projection. At No. 10, Alabama is currently matched up with No. 7 Oregon.
Here are the 12 teams currently in the playoff based on Tuesday night’s rankings:
- Ohio State (Big 10 auto bid)
- Indiana (at large)
- Texas A&M (SEC auto bid)
- Georgia (at large)
- Texas Tech (Big 12 auto bid)
- Ole Miss (at large)
- Oregon (at large)
- Oklahoma (at large)
- Notre Dame (at large)
- Alabama (at large)
- Georgia Tech (ACC auto bid)
- Tulane (American auto bid)
The field will almost certainly look different a month from now when the playoff officially gets started as there are three more Saturdays before the playoff is set in stone. Alabama is hoping it has three more games to improve its standing with the committee.
Either way, it’s likely Alabama’s spot will change. Winning out would mean an SEC Championship + likely a big jump in the rankings but a third loss—either to Auburn or the eventual SEC Champion—could see the Tide drop out completely.
Alabama had been the highest ranked 1-loss team in the first two weeks of the playoff rankings. The Tide is now the third highest-ranked 2-loss team, behind Oklahoma and Notre Dame, but still ahead of 1-loss teams including BYU and Georgia Tech.
As it stands, the highest ranked 3-loss team is currently Texas at No. 18.
Alabama is still the only team to have four wins over teams currently ranked in the top 25.
College Football Playoff bracket
Wondering why the final two spots in the bracket look different from the CFP Top 25? Here’s what you need to know:
- 5 automatic bids: The 5 highest-ranked conference champions earn a spot in the 12-team bracket
- 7 at-large bids: The 7 highest ranked teams remaining in the final CFP Top 25
- First round bye: The top four seeds earn a bye to the quarterfinal round
- On-campus games: Teams seeded 5-8 will host teams seeded 9-12 in first round playoff games
To win a national championship, teams with a first-round bye would need to win three straight games while anyone coming out of the first round would need to win four consecutive games—the way Ohio State did last season.
The official bracket will be unveiled Sunday, Dec. 4.
