Alabama, Samford learn first round opponents for Women’s NCAA Tournament

While the NCAA men’s bracket was the first to be released on Selection Sunday, March Madness belongs to all of college basketball.
The Alabama and Samford women’s basketball teams both already knew they’d be in the bracket but on Sunday, each team found out where it will be going for the first round this weekend.

2026 Women’s March Madness
Reigning champion UConn is still undefeated and enters the tournament as the No. 1 overall seed + overwhelming favorite to win the title again.
The other three 1 seeds include UCLA, Texas and South Carolina.
There were 10 total SEC teams in the bracket, the second most of any conference behind the 12 teams from the Big Ten.

Alabama women’s basketball
The Crimson Tide is headed to the NCAA Tournament for the fourth straight year, extending its longest streak since the turn of the century.
Alabama earned a 6 seed this year, its second highest under coach Kristy Curry. Here’s what you need to know about the Tide’s first round matchup:
- Who: No. 11 Rhode Island Rams vs. No. 6 Alabama Crimson Tide
- When: Saturday, March 21 | TBA
- Where: KFC Yum! Center | Louisville, KY

Rhode Island is in the tournament for the first time in three decades. The two teams have never faced each other.
The winner of that game will play the winner of Louisville-Vermont in the second round.
Samford women’s basketball

Samford is returning to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2012 after winning the SoCon Women’s Basketball Tournament.
The Bulldogs are now just 16-18 overall but are still headed to the big dance. This team has seemingly turned it on at the right time, not just riding a 3-game winning streak in the postseason but winning eight of its last 10 games.
Samford has a chance to win its first ever tournament game in the First Four when it plays Southern.
