Music fans across Alabama had been waiting years to see the Alabama Shakes back on stage in their home state.

And it finally happened Saturday night in Birmingham as the band brought their reunion tour to the new Coca-Cola Amphitheater. It was their first show in Birmingham since 2017.

The band, which started in Athens in 2009, put out two albums between 2012 and 2015 but went on a six-year hiatus before coming together in Tuscaloosa in 2024. That was a surprise show though and while they did have to go on stage a little early, the crowd in Birmingham was much bigger.

A trio of original members of the band—Brittany Howard, Heath Fogg + Zac Cockrell—fed off that crowd, braving the heat and humidity. The band played 21 total songs, staying on stage for roughly 90 minutes.

Brittany Howard and Co. came to the stage around 7:30PM as fans were still filling in the amphitheater. But the band started with one of their hits, “Hang Loose”, which quickly grabbed the audience’s attention and turned a social event into a dance party.

Thank you Alabama! We love you!

So far, there are no other in-state shows for the band but we wouldn’t be surprised to see one or two more down the road, especially if a new album is in the mix.

The Alabama Shakes has teased some new music with several videos and pictures of the band doing some work in the studio. Nothing has been announced just yet though so make sure to keep an eye out on their social media pages for any further teasers.
