This month was the anniversary of the end of World War II, marking eight decades since the official end of the global conflict.

One Alabama man who lived through that moment after serving in the war is still thriving in Alexander City and he got to celebrate his 106th birthday over the weekend with some help from the Alabama Department of Veteran Affairs.

Willie Bennett, who currently resides at the Bill Nichols State Veterans Home, wore a crown and sat in a throne while surrounded by fellow residents and VA workers to celebrate his birthday.

Bennett was born in Marengo County in 1919 and served in Germany during World War II.

In a story from WAKA in Montgomery, Bennett said one of his favorite memories from his life was when he got to meet Martin Luther King Jr. while singing in a choir during the Civil Rights Movement.

Gov. Kay Ivey also issued a commendation for Bennett’s birthday celebration.
