labama Wildlife Center’s proposed license plate design is officially a reality, and it should be available soon at your local DMV.

The plate’s design, which features an owl overlooking a snowy, wooded background, was unveiled in August 2025, when Alabama Wildlife Center (AWC) informed the public that the design would need 1,000 sign ups before May 1.

The state of Alabama requires 1,000 pre-commitments in order to release the design to the public, according to AWC.

On Thursday, April 23, AWC officially gathered 1,000 sign-ups, giving Alabama drivers a new license plate design to choose from.

“As Alabama’s oldest and largest wildlife rehabilitation center, we’ve provided lifesaving care to more than 100,000 injured and orphaned animals over the past 45 years. This meaningful tag gives us a powerful new way to fund our mission and reach more wildlife across Alabama.”

Not only is it a gorgeous design — it is also the first license plate in the state dedicated to helping injured and orphaned wildlife. Each tag generates $41.25 for AWC, supporting the organization’s:

  • Emergency care services
  • Food + medicine for wildlife
  • Rehab facilities
  • Public outreach + education

How do I get the owl plate?

Now that the design has reached the requirements to become an official specialty plate, Alabama will begin the production process on the plate. For the 1,000 who signed up, the state will distribute the vouchers with instructions on how to obtain the license plate.

Once it is in production, anyone may request the owl plate at their local licensing office.

No specific date has been announced yet, but stay tuned to the Alabama DMV website to see when they officially make the owl plate available to all.
