Alabama’s top 25 places to live in 2026 might surprise you

Whether you are a young professional, looking to settle down with your family, retire or just looking for a change, there are communities throughout Alabama that make great places to live.
Each year, the digital publication Niche publishes lists of the best places to live in each state based on based on crime, public schools, cost of living, job opportunities and local amenities.
The Birmingham area dominated the Alabama list this year, with 15 of the 25 cities being within greater Birmingham.
For the most part, the communities are suburbs of a larger cities, primarily Birmingham and Huntsville.
The top 25 places to live in Alabama, according to Niche, are:

Meadowbrook, an unincorporated community in the suburbs of Birmingham, topped several Niche lists for Alabama this year, including:
- Best Places to Raise a Family
- Best Suburbs to Live
- Best Suburbs to Raise a Family
The community was number two for Best Places to Buy a House in Alabama and Best Suburbs to Buy a House in Alabama. It was number three for Best Suburbs for Young Professionals in Alabama.
Reviews of the area say that it is a safe community with friendly neighbors and plenty of job opportunities. The proximity to Birmingham without the bustle of the city is a major perk to the folks who live there.
Huntsville proper, Madison, Florence and unincorporated community Harvest and made the list in northern Alabama for their abundance of aerospace and engineering employment opportunities.
In the southern-most part of the state, Fairhope and Spanish Fort took the cake for their family-friendly lifestyles, quality public schools and proximity to Mobile.
Pike Road, unincorporated community Blue Ridge, Auburn and Opelika represent the best places to live in southeast Alabama for a variety of reasons, including growth, great schools, affordable home values and sense of community.
