Alabama’s trio of Groundhog Day prognosticators speak — did they predict an early Spring?

It’s unanimous. All three of Alabama’s most famous Groundhog Day prognosticators did not see their shadow on Groundhog Day 2025. 

According to tradition, that means spring is coming early in Alabama

On Friday, Smith Lake Jake, came out of retirement, to make his annual prediction in the City of Graysville. With his houndstooth hat on for luck, the beloved groundhog told Mayor Julio Davis and everyone assembled at the local community center Spring is coming early.

The Bama Buzz’s own Jacob Blankenship was on hand to hear the news from the groundhog himself!

Birmingham Jill is undefeated

For the seventh year, Birmingham Jill, the awesome possum, has stood in for the resident Birmingham Zoo groundhog — Birmingham Bill.

Instead of waking up Bill, the Zoo asks Jill to take on his traditional duties. Over the last six years the adorable possum’s forecasts have been correct.

Jill did not see her shadow this Groundhog Day. Will she extend her winnng streak?

Sand Mountain Sam’s only miss – Blizzard of 93

The legendary North Alabama Groundhog Day prognosticator that goes by the name of Sand Mountain Sam also predicted an early Spring here in Alabama.

According to WHNT, the Albertville-based possum has only missed one forecast and that was the March Blizzard of 1993.

Punxsutawney Phil says 6 more weeks of winter

Of course all eyes were on Pennsylvania on Groundhog Day to see if Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow. The bad news for folks up North he did see his shadow meaning six more weeks of winter.
