Be prepared for holiday travel. (ALDOT)

As holiday travel ramps up, Alabama drivers are getting a welcome win: safer, smoother interstate travel. Read on to see how the Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) is helping make your road trips less stressful (no closures!)—and what you can do to help, too.

Read on for all the details.

ALDOT pauses lane closures for holiday travel

To keep traffic moving during the busiest travel days, ALDOT is hitting pause on all temporary interstate lane closures at these times:

  • 12PM on Tuesday, December 23–11:59PM on Friday, December 26
  • 12PM on Tuesday, December 30–11:59PM on Friday, January 2

This mean fewer construction backups, smoother traffic and a safer drive for all.

Holiday travel isn’t just busy—it can be dangerous.

According to ALDOT, in 2024, eight people lost their lives during the Christmas holiday and eight more during New Year’s.

Pausing lane closures is a proactive step to help reduce risks and keep families safe, whether heading to a celebration near or far.

Easy tips Alabama drivers can take during the holidays

Alabama drivers can also help keep each other safe this holiday season by:

  • Keeping their eyes on the road
  • Following speed limits
  • Buckling up
