ALDOT Spends $7 Million Annually Cleaning up Litter

Statewide, ALDOT spends about $7 million annually to clean up litter along our roadways. In 2019, a new state law – supported by ALDOT – went into effect to double the minimum fine for littering from $250 to $500 for a first conviction, and $1,000 plus community service for a second conviction. The two organizations have also teamed up to produce entertaining Public Service Announcements

Below is an example:

“Keep America Beautiful is one of the nation’s most outstanding community organizations. The Alabama Department of Transportation is proud to partner with Keep America Beautiful in efforts to address the deplorable issue of litter in our state. We’re committed to continuing our efforts to protect Alabama’s highways and natural resources.”
