The Auburn Tigers men’s wheelchair basketball team defeated the Alabama Crimson Tide this past weekend 70-59 to win its first national championship.

Played in Tucson, Arizona, this year’s Men’s National Intercollegiate Wheelchair Basketball Tournament Final was the wheelchair basketball version of the Iron Bowl, pitting the No. 1 ranked Tide against a No. 2 Auburn squad.

In addition to the championship game, the final was the rubber match between the two teams who had played against each other six times this season, splitting the series 3-3.

Auburn’s victory not only gave them a title, but also state bragging rights.

The win also denied Alabama its 5th national championship since 2013.

In total, it was a great weekend for the state of Alabama with Auburn winning the men’s championship and Alabama’s women’s wheelchair basketball earning its sixth consecutive title.
