It was an up-and-down first weekend for college football teams across Alabama but the biggest winner of Week 1 was certainly the Auburn Tigers.

After a 38-24 victory over Baylor on the road, many people thought Auburn could be moving into the top 25 for the first time since 2021.

However, the voters did not agree as they stuck with a most of the teams who were in the preseason rankings. The Tigers just missed the top 25 in the AP Poll, sitting in 27th overall and still remain outside the rankings in the USA Today Coaches Poll.

Meanwhile, the Crimson Tide fell to its lowest ranking since 2008. Alabama’s two-touchdown loss at Florida State pushed the Tide to No. 21 in the AP Poll and No. 20 in the Coaches Poll.

Keep reading to learn more about both schools’ rankings + see who the new No. 1 team in the country is.

Auburn football

Auburn started the season outside the Top 25 but still received some votes—32nd in the coaches poll, 37th in the AP Poll.

However, the Tigers had an impressive performance on Friday night in front of a national audience that made some people think they could jump into the top 25.

The Tigers were led by new quarterback Jackson Arnold who became the first Auburn quarterback to run for 100+ yards and pass for 100+ yards in his debut since Cam Newton in 2010. That kind of company will get you plenty of hype on The Plains.

But the national ranking systems didn’t budge too much.

Auburn actually lost points in the Coaches Poll, getting just 41 points after receiving 50 points in the preseason poll. That did still slightly move the Tigers up to a tie for 31st in the rankings.

In the AP Poll, the Tigers moved up 10 spots but remain just on the outside looking in.

Alabama football

Alabama had its lowest preseason ranking since 2008, entering this season at No. 8 in the AP rankings.

But it turns out, that may have been too high for the Crimson Tide. And this week’s voters agreed.

After losing to Florida State, Alabama has fallen to 21st in the AP Poll, the team’s lowest ranking since it was ranked 24th in the 2008 preseason poll. The Seminoles jumped up to No. 14 in the AP Poll.

There was some people who thought the Tide may fall out of the rankings completely but that was not the case as the team was ranked in the top 25 for the 280th straight week. That’s the second longest streak all time, behind Nebraska’s streak of 348 polls from 1981-2002.

Top 25 rankings

The preseason rankings certainly took a different look after one week of games as three top-10 matchups were sure to cause a mixup.

Defending champion Ohio State moved up two spots and is the new No. 1 team after taking down Arch Manning and previous No. 1 Texas. The rest of the top 10 in the AP Poll looks like this:

  1. Ohio State
  2. Penn State
  3. LSU
  4. Georgia
  5. Miami
  6. Oregon
  7. Texas
  8. Clemson
  9. Notre Dame
  10. South Carolina

10 total SEC teams are ranked this week including with Georgia leading the way. LSU and Texas remain in the top 10 as well while South Carolina moves in. The other conference teams in the top 25 include:

  • 13. Florida
  • 18. Oklahoma
  • 19. Texas A&M
  • 20. Ole Miss
  • 21. Alabama
  • 22. Tennessee
