An Auburn teenager with Down syndrome was recently featured on a billboard in Times Square as part of the National Down Syndrome Society’s campaign for its annual Buddy Walk.
Bentlee Williams, a gold medalist gymnast at the 2024 Special Olympics, got to travel to New York City with her family to see herself on the big screen at one of the world’s most popular destinations.
“What began as one little girl simply wanting the opportunity to cheer alongside her peers became so much bigger. Bentlee’s story is a reminder that inclusion isn’t about giving someone special treatment—it’s about making sure everyone has the opportunity to belong, participate, and be valued. We are beyond grateful to NDSS for seeing Bentlee, believing in her, and giving her a platform to help shine a light on the importance of true inclusion.”

National Down Syndrome Society’s Buddy Walk
The National Down Syndrome Society (NDSS) held its 31st NYC Buddy Walk on September 12, one of over 150 Buddy Walk events across the country.
Participants gathered in Times Square as the day started with a video presentation featuring images of more than 500 individuals with Down syndrome from across the world. That’s when Bentlee Williams got to see her picture on the big screen.
“Seeing your face in Times Square is an unforgettable experience. For individuals with Down syndrome and their families, it’s a moment of joy, pride and belonging. We are proud to bring our community together for a weekend that celebrates individuals with Down syndrome and shares that joy with the world.”
Kandi Pickard, NDSS CEO
