Metallica has announced its inaugural marching band competition, where marching bands across five categories perform their best rendition of a Metallica song.

The state of Alabama has three finalists in the running—Auburn University representing the Division 1 College category, Pell City High School representing the large high school category and Cleveland High School in the small high school category.

Metallica’s Marching Band Competition will award over $180K in prizes

High school and collegiate finalists will be narrowed down by a panel of judges, then the final prize winners will be selected by Metallica. There will also be a fan-favorite vote in the high school and collegiate categories.

According to the competition’s website, winners will be awarded musical equipment for their school program, furnished by Metallica and our sponsors. Here’s a breakdown of the prize value of each category:

  • College Division 1—$75,000
