A new arrival at the Montgomery Zoo
The baby hippopotamus, Anuket, was born on February 9th and has quickly become a bundle of joy. Spending the first two months bonding with mother Lola and father Nile, Anuket has already made a mark with a strong personality and playful nature. According to her caretakers — a particular fondness for watermelon has also been discovered!
Named after the Egyptian goddess of the Nile River, Anuket’s name symbolizes beauty—a perfect fit for such an energetic and charming young hippo.
Now ready for her public debut, Anuket is eager to meet visitors at the Montgomery Zoo. Visitors can find her in the Pygmy Hippo nursing suite, where she’ll be showing off her adorable personality and capturing hearts.

Pygmy hippos are listed as endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). This sweet arrival marks the eighth pygmy hippo birth at the zoo in nine years— a huge deal for preserving this incredible species for future generations.
