Meaher State Park in Spanish Fort unveiled its completed campground expansion Friday, August 15. The expansion includes four new cabins and a new park office.

Meaher attracts thousands of visitors annually thanks to its proximity to Gulf Coast beaches, Interstate 10 and the Eastern Shore.

Park visitors can now look forward to:

  • 45 luxury RV campsites with full hookups
  • A new bathhouse with 11 family-style restrooms
  • Four waterfront tiny cabins
  • New park headquarters with staff offices
  • An interpretive center for education
  • A new entrance gate and fence along Battleship Parkway

“We’ve made it no secret that our goal is to provide a first-class experience for all of our visitors at our State Parks, especially when it comes to overnight accommodations.

The additional campground spaces, as well as the beautiful tiny cabins, mean that more people than ever can visit and enjoy this park.”

The campground and bathhouse improvements are thanks to the RESTORE Act, a federal trust fund started after the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill.

Other additions were funded in part by $80 million approved by voters in 2022 for state parks and $1.1 million from GOMESA, which benefits the Gulf oil and gas producing states.

“It’s truly an exciting time in our State Parks, because we have so many incredible projects under construction or finishing.

The completion of this project at Meaher State Park should reinvigorate this park, and these upgrades definitely make the park better than it’s ever been.”

 State Parks Director Matthew Capps

Some of those in-progress projects include:

  • A total renovation of Lake Lurleen State Park in Tuscaloosa County
  • A new lodge at Cheaha State Park in Clay and Cleburne counties
  • A campground expansion at Gulf State Park in Gulf Shores
