Barons, Biscuits to play in Southern League championship series: Tickets, schedule + how to watch
For the first time since 2013, there will be two teams from Alabama playing in the Southern League championship series.
The Birmingham Barons and the Montgomery Biscuits each needed three games in their respective division series but both advanced to the final round with a home win Friday night.
Now, the two teams will face off with a league title on the line for the first time ever. Keep reading for everything you need to know about the championship series including the schedule, how to get tickets + a quick look at the teams’ history in the Southern League.
Championship Series
There’s a quick turnaround for both teams as they get ready to play in the best-of-three championship series. Things get started in the state capital Sunday afternoon with Game 2 and the if necessary Game 3 to be played in the Magic City.
Here’s the complete schedule and a link to tickets for both stadiums:
- Game 1: Barons at Biscuits | Sunday, Sept. 22 | 3:33PM | Riverwalk Stadium in Montgomery | Tickets
- Game 2: Biscuits at Barons | Tuesday, Sept. 24 | 7PM | Regions Field in Birmingham | Tickets
- Game 3 (if necessary): Biscuits at Barons | Wednesday, Sept. 25 | 7PM | Regions Field in Birmingham | Tickets
No matter what, the series champion will be decided at Regions Field.
During the regular season, the two teams met twice with each team hosting a six-game series. The Biscuits won 10 of the 12 games, including the showcase game at Rickwood Field in June.
If you cannot make it to the games, you can watch from home by subscribing to MiLB TV for just $3.99 per month.
Title drought coming to an end
One of these two teams will be ending their title droughts, which have both passed a decade now.
Birmingham’s last title came in 2013 which was the same year Regions Field opened and it was the last time the Barons made a playoff appearance. That was also the last time a team from Alabama won the Southern League.
Since the league was formed in 1964, Birmingham has won the title seven times, six of them as the Birmingham Barons. However, the franchise has just one title in the last two decades.
Meanwhile, the Biscuits have made nine consecutive postseason appearances but none of those playoff trips ended with a championship. Montgomery’s last title came when they won back-to-back titles in 2006 and 2007.
