Benjamin Russell High School set to open new $102M campus

Nearly three years after breaking ground, Alexander City Schools is set to officially open its new high school campus.
On Monday, the school system announced its schedule for transitioning to the new Benjamin Russell High School. The first full day for students is scheduled for Monday, Feb. 9.

Over the last few years, the estimated cost of the new campus grew to $102 million. It includes:
- 1,200-seat arena-style gymnasium
- 672-seat performing arts center
- Open courtyard
- New football and soccer practice field
- Competition track
- Fortified tornado shelter
The new high school is located at the Charles E. Bailey Sportsplex in Alex City. You can get to the campus by driving down Barbara H. Young Drive.

Here are key dates for students to know during the transition period:
- Last day for students on the current BRHS campus: Thursday, Jan. 29
- Remote learning: Friday, Jan. 30
- Senior Orientation: Thursday, Feb. 5 | 12PM
- Junior Orientation: Thursday, Feb. 5 | 2PM
- Sophomore Orientation: Friday, Feb. 6 | 12PM
- Freshman Orientation: Friday, Feb. 6 | 2PM
- Remote learning ends: Friday, Feb. 6
- First day for students on the new BRHS campus: Monday, Feb. 9
The school system says an open house will be held during the week of February 9, giving families and community members the opportunity to tour classrooms and learning spaces. Specific dates and additional details will be shared soon.
