Almost $200 million, that’s the price tag on new facilities at the University of South Alabama’s (USA) medical school. You might remember the groundbreaking for this project last year, and now, we know who will be responsible for building it: BL Harbert International, a Birmingham-based company. We have renderings of the new facilities – and more about BL Harbert International.

About the project

Usa Medical Building
Groundbreaking in December of 2023 for the new medical school. (University of South Alabama)

Expected to be finished in 2026, the five-story building will include a basement, storm shelters, classrooms, study spaces + laboratories — all housed in almost 250-thousand square feet of educational space.

And it’s not just the physical Medical College that’s expanding, the new facilities allow the Whiddon College of Medicine to expand how many doctors graduate each year, from 80 to 100. This is important state-wide, too. The Whiddon College of Medicine boasts an in-state retention rate for physicians in the 85th percentile — in short? Doctors from USA are more likely to stay in the Yellowhammer State after graduation. Now, there will be more of them!

Once this project wraps up, the ‘medical district’ side of South Alabama’s campus will be complete, too. It includes the Whiddon College of Medicine, the College of Nursing, Pat Capps Covey College of Allied Health Professions, the Health Simulation Building and the Charles M. Baugh Biomedical Library.
