Biscuits, Barons secure spots in Southern League postseason
For the first time in Southern League history, teams from Birmingham and Montgomery will be playing in the same postseason.
The Montgomery Biscuits won four games in a six-game series against the Birmingham Barons that included a stop at Rickwood Field. Both teams did just enough to finish the first half of the season on top of their respective divisions, earning a spot in the Southern League playoffs set for September.
Keep reading to find out more about the state’s history in the Southern League playoffs + learn how the Barons and Biscuits could face off for the league title.
Alabama teams in the playoffs
Four Alabama cities have been represented in Southern League history including:
- Birmingham
- Huntsville
- Mobile
- Montgomery
Since the league started in 1964, teams from Alabama have accounted for 21 league titles. However, no in-state team has won since the Barons won in 2013. That was the last time Birmingham was in the playoffs which was the same year Regions Field opened.
This season will mark the first time the Barons and Biscuits will ever be in the same postseason. 2013 was also the last time two in-state teams made it to the playoffs in the same year, as the former Mobile BayBears lost to the Barons in the championship series.
If the Rocket City Trash Pandas can secure a postseason spot during the second half of the season, it will be the first time the state has ever had three playoff teams in the same year.
Southern League playoff format
The Southern League playoffs will consist of four teams:
- North Division first half winner vs. North Division second half winner or runner-up
- South Division first half winner vs. South Division second half winner or runner-up
The second-place team in a division during the second half will make the playoffs if the Barons or Biscuits win their division again. Each playoff matchup including the championship series will be decided by a best-of-3 series.
If the Barons + Biscuits both win their first-round series, it will be just the fourth time two Alabama teams meet in the Southern League championship series.
The playoffs will begin in late September.
