One of Cheaha State Park’s iconic cabins was severely damage by a fire Monday morning.
According to the Shinbone Valley Volunteer Fire Department, crews responded to Cabin 3 on Bunker Loop just before 11AM. Fortunately, no injuries were reported and the fire was contained to the cabin.
“This cabin was a very special place to many and its loss is deeply felt within our state park community.”

The cabin was a part of the park’s Bluff Side Cabins which featured four buildings along the western bluff of Cheaha Mountain and offer spectacular sunset views.
It was nearing the century mark of its life as the Civilian Conservation Corps cabin was built in the 1930s.
A cause for the fire has not been released yet but the remaining cabins remain available for reservations.

The park still has 15 cabins available for visitors to stay overnight. Cheaha offers three bluff side cabins with breathtaking views along with deluxe cabins for two and four cabins with the capacity for four people each.
“The cabins are beautiful and they are a one of a kind experience, but please remember that older structures sometimes have issues. We strive to maintain these as best as we can without detriment to the original structures. We have new roofs on each cabin, however, when the rain is heavy there can be leaks in the rockwork itself. If the power goes out in the park, these cabins will not have lights. They do have new gas log fireplace units.”

The park recommends reservations be made very early as they can be booked up to a year in advance. You can find more information on how to reserve them on the Alabama State Parks website.
